Lent Devotions – Day 7

Lent is a solemn religious observance in the liturgical calendar of many Christian denominations that begins on Ash Wednesday and covers a period of approximately six weeks before Easter Sunday. Lent is a season of the Christian Year where Christians focus on simple living, prayer, and fasting in order to grow closer to God.

Many times we avoid confessions, asking pardon for sins to God. Even in prayer we do not remember our sins and ask pardon to God. We get many chances for repentance, but instead of repentance, again and again we fall into sins. Let us pray to God to forgive our sins and give us strength to repent about our sins and also to avoid sin in future.

Jesus heals a paralytic – Jesus healing miracles

Healing of the Paralytic ManParalysis is the complete loss of muscle function for one or more muscle groups. Paralysis can cause loss of feeling or loss of mobility in the affected area.  Some of you might have seen paralysed people lying on bed, even some of them are lying in that stage for months or years. Their family members have to help them to do everything. They have to remove their urine and stool, make them clean and wash their body, change their dress, means everything. For some people it is burden for them, but most people take care of the paralysed with love and affection. God will surely bless them for their service and love.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic Mark 2:1-12

1When he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home.
2 So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them.
3 Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.
4 And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay.

The bible says “Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. ” This paralyzed man could not walk or move himself. Four people carried him to Jesus with strong faith that Jesus can heal him. But because of the crowd, they could not enter in the house. When they realize that they cannot possibly get him through the door, they carry their helpless paralytic friend upstairs to the roof and lower the bed in front of Jesus as He is speaking.  The roof might not have made with large pieces of wood and might not have shingles, but had tiles or such material which could be lifted or broken through easily to make a hole.  Just imagine, if this was happened today, how could they make a hole in the multi storied/concrete roof ?  These men were so sure that Jesus would be able to heal him, otherwise they wouldn’t have gone to so much trouble. Their determination to place him before Jesus displays their faith that he would be healed.

5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

The first thing Jesus said when He saw that they believed was, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”  Probably not what the man or his friends expected. He came to Jesus because he wanted to walk.

Except that Jesus knew what this man needed most because he knew what was in his heart.  Jesus knew that being paralyzed would be difficult but it was even worse not to be forgiven. Jesus is the Son of Man, and God has given him the power to forgive sins and heal people.

6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts,
7 “Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
8 At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves; and he said to them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts?
9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and take your mat and walk’?
10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—
11 “I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home.”
12 And he stood up, and immediately took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

The healing of the paralytic impressed and excited everyone present. In today’s world also we can see people without faith. They may ask how prayer can heal a person. They do not believe in prayer, they go to church just as a routine, do not have confession even once in a year, no repentance, just live in the present world enjoying the life.

Many of us are sick and under treatment. Some sickness give us a chance to seek God, attend retreat, repent, confession, counselling and make a change in our life spiritually. After this spiritual healing, many diseases, even some diseases which medical science have confirmed that are not curable, are cured. You may not believe it, unless it happen before your eyes. But many testimonies reveal that it is true. If you have strong faith your prayers will be answered and Jesus will surely heal you physically and spiritually.

Christ deals first with the spiritual problem—the forgiveness of sins—and then the physical problem—the physical affliction. Most people want it the other way around, putting greater emphasis on healing the physical ailment than fixing the spiritual problem.

Do you see someone in your life that needs to be carried to Christ in prayer because their paralysis is so grave? Pray for them daily and encourage your friends/relatives also to pray for them. Jesus will heal through your prayers.

Do you surround yourself with people who bring you to Christ when you are unable to choose Him for yourself?

If you have faith in prayer and Jesus healing, you may download Prayer Book for the sick . Pray for friends/relatives who are sick. Like the faith of the friends healed the paralytic man, Jesus will heal them through your faithful prayers.

May God bless you all.
