Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant
5 When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him
6 and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.”
7 And he said to him, “I will come and cure him.”
8 The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.
9 For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.”
10 When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, “Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.
11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,
12 while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
13 And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.” And the servant was healed in that hour. (Matthew 8:5-13)
Paralysis is the loss of muscle function in part of your body. If it is critical, the person can’t move or do anything. He become a burden for others also. This centurion’s servant was in critical condition which is clear in his own words to Jesus “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.”

Even though the centurion was an honorable man, he still needed to place his faith in Jesus. He could have ordered Jesus to visit his home, but he was humble. He appealed to Jesus. Jesus is not as impressed with titles, degrees, and achievements as we are. He is impressed with those who really do humbly believe him. The centurion did not ask Jesus to visit his home, but Jesus understood his problem and replied to him “I will come and cure him.” This is what we should realise about the love of Jesus. He is ready to hear our humble prayer with strong faith and visit our home any time. Even without asking, he will solve our problems.
This centurion understood the power and authority of spoken commands, and believed that all Jesus had to do was to “speak a word” and the power of the Lord’s word would heal the servant. This showed his faith in Jesus. Jesus was amazed at his faith and impressed and said to the centurion “Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.” And the servant was healed in that hour. He’s the ultimate healer. He heals the servant physically. He heals the centurion spiritually. Jesus heals mind and body. Jesus heals the whole person.
The centurion serves as a tremendous example for all who love God’s Word and seek the healing words of Jesus.
Jesus is sovereign ruler. The Bible says he is king of kings, lord of lords. For some of us, Jesus is way too small. Many times we have no time to pray, no time to spend with God. But when we are in trouble, sick we seek God. At that time also he forgive our sins, forget our past, listen our prayer, heal us and solve our problems. But after that we forget to thank him, going away from him with worldy entertainment and happiness. Let us change our life, find a few minutes daily from our busy schedule for prayer and thanksgiving to Jesus. Thanksgiving is a must, don’t forget it ever.
