Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy

This is a video sermon about Sabbath Observation by Fr. Xavier Khan Vattayil. Fr. Xavier Khan Vattayil is the founder-director of Sehion Retreat Centre, of Palakkad Diocese. Fr. Xavier who has earned name and fame as an outstanding preacher of the Word of the Lord, Retreat Leader, television orator and organizer, is conducting many retreats for priests, nuns and believers in India and abroad. This video is in Malayalam Language of Kerala State, India. I tried to translate summary of this video for people who do not understand Malayalam as below.

“not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”(Hebrews 10:25)

These days when we walk on street outside of many shops we can see notice board written that “Open on all Sundays“.  Owners of many of these shops are Christians. Dear brethren, may be you feel that today you have a strong stand and base. What is wrong if we open our shops on Sundays? Sunday is Lord’s Day and we should reserve this day only for Lord.

How should we celebrate Sunday? We must get up early in the morning, take bath, wear the best and neat dress. You are going to adore the God, so you must wear neat and best dress. It should be washed, ironed and kept ready well in advance. Go to church early and reach before the Holy Mass start, remember your sins, repent, do penance for own sins, for family members and for others. If possible and the Holy spirit guide, then do a good confession. Avoid reaching the church in a hurry after the Holy Mass started.  When I went Trichur for a retreat, I saw many people reach the church before the Holy Mass start and completing Holy Rosary and other personal prayers.

Attend the Holy Mass with full faith and devotion. Don’t run out immediately after the Holy Mass when the priest turn to sacristy. When the Priest go to sacristy for changing vestments, you should stay in the church for at least 5 minutes, pray to God and give thanks to him for allowing to attend the Holy Mass. Don’t run away like small kids run out of class after hearing the bell or the rat run out of the whole.

One of the main rule of the church is that on Sundays and on obligatory days all Christians must attend the full Holy Mass. To do this all concerned must co-operate. If a Christian factory owner or shop owner open his office on Sunday, then any christian working there is bound to attend his duty and forced to avoid the church. The church strictly asked not to force any christian to avoid church and attend his duty. It is the duty of the officer, owner or any other concerned person to give one day holiday and allow every person to worship the God once in a week.

Today everywhere problems, failure, no children in family, financial loss in business, unemployment and much more. Why all these problems coming? You should think about what God said:

27 But if you do not obey me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle an unquenchable fire in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume her fortresses.”(Jeremiah 17:27)

Sermon concluded here with prayer.

Below are a few Bible verses about Sabbath.

Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy

“19 This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and stand at the Gate of the People, through which the kings of Judah go in and out; stand also at all the other gates of Jerusalem. 20 Say to them, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah and all people of Judah and everyone living in Jerusalemwho come through these gates. 21 This is what the Lord says: Be careful not to carry a load on the Sabbath day or bring it through the gates of Jerusalem. 22 Do not bring a load out of your houses or do any work on the Sabbath, but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your ancestors.23 Yet they did not listen or pay attention; they were stiff-necked and would not listen or respond to discipline. 24 But if you are careful to obey me, declares the Lord, and bring no load through the gates of this city on the Sabbath, but keep the Sabbath day holy by not doing any work on it,25 then kings who sit on David’s throne will come through the gates of this city with their officials. They and their officials will come riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by the men of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, and this city will be inhabited forever. 26 People will come from the towns of Judah and the villages around Jerusalem, from the territory of Benjamin and the western foothills, from the hill country and the Negev, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and incense, and bringing thank offerings to the house of the Lord. 27 But if you do not obey me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle an unquenchable fire in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume her fortresses.”(Jeremiah 17:19-27)

This emphasis on people ceasing work on the Sabbath is foremost in the primary commandment that instructs us how to keep the Sabbath:

“Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day” (Deut 5:12-15).

In the Old Testament, God stated,

“Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you,” (Exodus 20:8-10)

Daily Prompt – Sparkling or Still

What’s your idea of a perfect day off: one during which you can quietly relax, doing nothing, or one with one fun activity lined up after the other? Tell us how you’d spend your time.

Sunday is the day that the Lord Jesus rose from the dead. For many Christians this is the ‘Lord’s Day’, but for some they celebrate Saturday as Sabbath.  Sunday is a holiday for all offices.  As per the Bible and the church Lord’s Day should be only for Lord. No other work should be done on that day. Prayer and other such activities should be done. Should not do any kind of business activities on that day.

But in today’s world, people just go to church, attend the holy mass, then go to market to buy fish, meat, vegetables etc. Some working people have no time for shopping on week days, so they buy for a week. For working women day off is the day to do washing clothes and other household work. For some people it is a day for entertainment. After lunch go for a movie, visit friends house etc. So, it is not easy for many people to make it a relax day, still some may sleep during day for a while and relax.

I go to church in the morning, do not do much work at home, but surely do some work.

some times sleep for a while in day time, watch T.V. Sometimes make a visit to friends house in the evening.

I don’t know it is sparkling or still.
